Spiritual Communion

Commentary

On or about  March 18th 2020 our new relationship with Christ outside of the walls of our churches became one of the most powerful transformations in all of mankind.

The Sacraments of the Catholic faith can be stunning in comfort to even the fallen away. It is understood that the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Catholic Church.

A Spiritual Communion reminds you of the indwelling of the Most Holy Trinity within you, but also increases the indwelling by a new inpouring of the Precious Blood into your soul.

When we are stopped from receiving that profound source (the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior) we go to what we have learned from history. But it became so much more rich on March 18th, 2020.

Gifts of the Spirit...but I would add another...the gift of Spiritual Communion. In the early church Spiritual Communion was considered "the middle" way of the three distinct ways of taking part of Communion of the three established ways of reception; physical reception being the most efficacious.

Since March 18th, 2020 I have felt an indescribable change regarding Spiritual Communion. Our Churches were forced to be shuttered, but the Spirit of God would not be extinguished. Since the early beginning of the Church, the billions of Liturgies, every note sung in worship, every faith filled prayer put forth a crescendo of glory erupted from our Churches and took what was once "the middle way" and made it "the only way"!

As we now enter ordinary time and celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi (And June, the Sacred Heart of Jesus) let us be reminded of the Precious Body and Blood in the form of Spiritual Communion This prayer that when recited frequently, is of great consolation and a beautiful renewal of the union with Christ.

"My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

"Blessed elements are not another form of superstition; they are the simple use of concrete signs to usher in the invisible life of God. God has always functioned that way - recognizing our concrete bodily nature and its need of concreteness. Strictly speaking, do you really believe that the God who made you has to pour water over your head at the church in order that you become His child, in Baptism? Really? But that's how He does it. Why? It is because of our bodily need of concrete visible signs. We are not just spirit, we are body and spirit."

Catholics who choose to weave the use of sacramentals into their daily lives can experience a richer, more textured Catholicism. For instance, one young father sprinkles holy water around the beds of his children and prays to God to protect them against nightmares, which sometimes are a problem in their house. Another mother I know uses blessed salt when she bakes bread for her family. Before setting out on a long trip, one youth group blesses its cars with holy oil for a safe journey. I myself have experienced peace during difficult times when I kissed or touched the Miraculous Medal I wear as a reminder of the loving protection of my Mother in heaven. The list of how sacramentals have affected my life and the lives of those I know goes on and on.

If you do not use sacramentals, consider looking into their use. Ann Ball's excellent "Handbook of Catholic Sacramentals" (Our Sunday Visitor) provides explanations of the history and proper use of many popular and obscure sacramentals. As Christ was the invisible God made visible, so sacramentals, like sacraments, are visible signs of His invisible grace, sanctifying daily life. In a way, they are daily restatements of the Incarnation, of God made flesh, and are dwelling among us in mysterious and wonderful ways. Regina Doman  http://www.ewtn.com/library/ANSWERS/WHATARE.htm

The Medal with its a powerful means:

  • To destroy witchcraft and all other diabolical influences.
  • To keep away the spells of magicians, of wicked and evil-minded persons.
  • To impart protection to persons tempted, deluded or tormented by evil spirits.
  • To obtain the conversion of sinners, especially when they are in danger of death.
  • To serve as an armor in temptations against holy purity.
  • To destroy the effects of poison.
  • To secure a timely and healthy birth for children.
  • To afford protection against storms and lightning.
  • To serve as an efficacious remedy for bodily afflictions and a means of protection against contagious diseases.

Finally, the Medal has often been used with admirable effect even for animals infected with plague or other maladies, and for fields when invaded by harmful insects.

THE USE OF THE MEDAL

It may be worn about the neck, attached to the scapular or the rosary, or otherwise carried devoutly about one's person. For the sick it can be placed on wounds, dipped in medicine or in water which is given to them to drink.

The Medal is frequently put into the foundation of houses or in walls, hung over doors, or fastened on stables and barns to call down God's protection and blessing. It is also buried in fields, as the saintly Father Paul of Moll advised his friends to do.

No particular prayers are prescribed, for the very wearing and use of the Medal is considered a silent prayer to God to grant us, through the merits of St. Benedict, the favors we request. However, for obtaining extraordinary favors, it is highly recommended to perform special devotions in honor of the holy Father St. Benedict, for instance, on Tuesday, on which day the Church commemorates the death of the holy Patriarch. The Way of the Cross is also highly recommended or a novena to St. Benedict. His feast is celebrated March 21st, two days after the feast of St. Joseph.
